Personality
Ignatius Kane is a warm, friendly man. He is almost always seen with a grandfatherly smile, and his company has made charitable donations and research efforts to curing diseases that make him a popular public figure. However, those who know him personally can sometimes feel unease or intimidation at his presence, as if his gregarious exterior should not be trusted. Kane never seems to display anger or frustration, reacting calmly to any setback. However, this does not mean that he cannot be crossed or does not hold grudges. Most importantly, it does not mean he will not seek to punish those who wrong him. He will simply do so while utilizing a calm demeanor and polite conversation.
Power
Kane can control or create gravity fields. Gravity is an extremely complex force to manipulate, and utilizing its full potential takes great practice. However, several decades have allowed Kane to hone his ability into something quite formidable. By manipulating the gravity of people, objects, or the atmosphere, Kane is able to do the following:
- Make something or someone (including himself) so heavy it can't move or so light it begins to float away. This effect disappears once Kane leaves the area or a light object floats out of his proximity. He is able to manipulate several fields simultaneously.
- Change his own gravitational pull to suck in objects or people around him or invert it to repel them. Kane's pull and push are more powerful than those of telekinesis, but at the cost of not being able to control an object's or person's actual movement in the air. He does not need to use his hands to perform this feat.
- Create a repel field around himself to deflect physical contact or blows, including bullets. This does not, however, repel energy.
- Create gravity wells in the atmosphere that suck in matter. These wells do attract energy. Anything sucked into the well is crushed. Kane will often make himself heavier while using this ability to protect himself from being drawn into his own well
- If he channels his pull through his hand, he can pull in specific objects or people from a range of about twenty feet. This pull is more powerful than the one channeled through his whole body, but only effects one thing or person at a time. The force of this pull, under normal circumstances, is so great that it cannot be outrun, even by those with superspeed or flight. Teleportation, however, can be used to escape it.
- By channeling his push through his hand, Kane can repel objects with much greater force, allowing him to blast through walls, blow back vehicles, or send grown men flying great distances. However, the full effect only works at close range. At mid-range his push can blow a man back several feet. At the far range (about 20 feet) his push can potentially knock a man down, but not do much worse.
- The Company believes Kane may have the capacity to make a gravity well so dense it creates a black hole and destroys the world. Assuming their theory is correct, there is obviously little benefit in Kane doing such a thing, as he would be destroyed as well.
Prolonged exposure to a greatly increased gravitational pull can cause internal organ damage and is potentially fatal. Exposure to decreased gravity has no ill-side effects, except perhaps motion sickness and being many feet up in the air once one's gravity has returned to normal.
Relationships
Despite being a public figure, Kane is a private person. He has no known close friends and no family to speak of. He does, however, have a large number of employees who follow his every direction. Exactly how many of these employees are privy to secret company information or projects is unknown. Kane holds a deep grudge against The Company for the abuse he suffered at their hands in his younger days. However, he is intrigued by Arthur Petrelli, believing that his philospophy regarding those with abilities may be in sync with his own.
History
As a young boy, Kane immigrated with his family to America from the UK due to growing concern that post WWII Europe was not a safe, stable place to live. After many years he ended up in medical school and lived a relatively normal life up until his ability manifested one day in his early 30s, causing him to accidentally create a gravity well which crushed his neighbor's car. Even though nobody was hurt in the incident, The Company was quick to apprehend him. Kane spent over a decade in captivity, locked up without rights and treated inhumanely by his captors. What The Company did not expect, however, was for Kane's ability to advance so that he could use it to attract or repel matter, allowing him to escape his prison by repelling and thus blasting through its walls.
After his escape Kane assumed a fake name and used his medical knowledge and business savvy to form the pharmaceutical company, Ouroboros. Ouroboros quickly grew until it eventually became a Fortune 500 company, at which point Kane took back his identity and became a public figure, thus ensuring that he was too high profile for The Company to recapture without significant risk of exposure. Since that time he has remained in the public eye, winning favor with charitable donations and events. The Company believes this public face to be an act, and that Ouroborous has a dark secret. If true, whatever secret Kane may harbor currently remains a mystery.
